Now, thanks to Google Street View, you can take a virtual tour of Japan’s newest bullet train line, called the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The name designates the region; Hokuriku and the name for Japan’s high-speed railway; Shinkansen. The line will be an extension of the Nagano Shinkansen Line.
The train features three separate seating options: The luxurious “Grand Class,” the “Green Car” and the “Standard Class.” It’s pretty easy to distinguish which train car you’re traveling in by the fanciness of its seating.
The Grand Class has only six rows of seats per car, with three reclining seats per row. An attendant cares for passengers throughout the entire trip and provided with amenities like food, drink, blankets, an eye mask and slippers.
The Green Car features a footrest and more leg room than the Standard Class, as well as an integrated radio set, a travel magazine and additional luggage space. Some Green Cars also feature hot towels and beverages, as well as smoking cars.
The Standard Class is nothing to brag about, but it’s still probably better than Amtrak.
The new line officially opens for business on Saturday, and connects Tokyo to Kanazawa, which used to take about six hours by car, or four by train. However the new line will be able to transport passengers between the two cities in just two-and-a-half hours.
According to Japan Times, tickets for the inaugural run sold out in just 25 seconds, exciting both local governments and the tourism industry.
Google also filmed a short behind-the-scenes video which shows how they captured these street views inside the train.
