Netflix announces Australian pricing and content after Reddit leak

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

orange1

Netflix Australia has released its content catalogue and pricing a day out from its March 24 launch, after the details were leaked on reddit on Sunday. On Monday morning, the leaked pricing details were confirmed via a Netflix press release emailed to Mashable.

The company has been smart in its move to the land Down Under by looking the other way with regards to Australians using VPN workarounds to access the U.S. version, therefore creating mass hype for a product before a local edition was even close to launch. Now, in another smart marketing ploy, Netflix Australia has undercut all its local competition in price for its standard subscription.

The cheapest monthly fee in the tiered-subscription model is the standard definition, single stream plan for a measly A$8.99, while the HD, double-stream plan is A$11.99 and a 4K ultra-high def package, which allows for four streams, goes for A$14.99. Competitor product Stan serves all definition models for A$10, with Presto available in standard definition for A$9.99 and Quickflix also sitting at A$9.99.

It is likely, given the recent price drops from local players, that there will be further price point shifting in the near future. To push strongly into the Australian market, Netflix will also offer consumers a month’s free subscription trial (a deal also available on Stan and Presto).

The company is launching locally with a stable of programs such as Netflix originals Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, which will be the main draw cards for Australian consumers. There will be no penalty for living on the other side of the world, with Netflix confirming that both shows will be available at the same time in Australia as in the U.S.

The company has previously been coy regarding the local release of Orange is the New Black, with the rights in Australia thought to be tied up with pay television company Foxtel.

Netflix has content deals with a range of production companies to bulk up its local catalogue such as BBC, FOX, NBC Universal, Village Roadshow Entertainment, Australian Broadcast Corporation, Walt Disney and Warner Bros.

Pricing in the U.S. is very similar to the Aussie offering — with standard definition streaming offered for U.S. $7.99, HD two-stream for U.S. $8.99 and the family model for U.S. $11.99.

Data limits won’t be a problem for Aussie consumers of Internet service providers Optus or iiNet, with both companies previously confirming that they would allow un-metered Netflix watching.

22 Steps to Restore a Hacked WordPress Site

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

how to restore a hacked wordpress site

Have you ever had your WordPress site hacked and did you have to pay somebody to restore it? It’s a bit of a mare when your website gets hacked. Most security specialists will charge you a premium to restore your site but they won’t tell you what’s involved. Shhhhh – it’s a secret!

We’re different so I’d like to share our 22-step plan on how to restore a hacked WordPress site so that you can see exactly what we do and how much effort it takes.

I love it When a Plan Comes Together:

  1. zip up the entire remote site files and download to local

  2. wipe the remote root folder (everything goes)

  3. Change FTP, cPanel, email account and MySQL passwords

  4. unzip local site and scan for any malware using, say Norton IS or SpyBot

  5. search all the local site file contents for terms such as preg_replace(“/.*/e” and base64_decode

Note: there are legitimate uses base64 decoding.  What you are looking for are a large number of hex or escape strings

    i.e. “\x65\x76\x61\x6c\x20\x28\x20\x67\x7a\x69\x6e\x66\x6c\x61\x74\x65″

  6. do a windows search across the local folder for timthumb.php – if found – you need to scrap the plugin and find an alternative – read why timthumb.php is evil !!

  7. check that your .htaccess file hasn’t been compromised and check that there are no other .htaccess files in any other folder (windows search)

  8. create a new separate root folder and unzip latest wordpress version there

  9. copy your wp-config.php fom the old site over to the new folder

  10. change your DB_PASS and your secret keys (leave wp_ table prefix for now)

  11. upload new clean bare WP to remote site

  12. login to WordPress and immediately change all user passwords – try to use random password generator like http://www.thebitmill.com/tools/password.html and bump the characters up to 12 or 16

  13. install “WordFence” or “BulletProof Security” firewall plugins

  14. if you don’t want to install a full firewall plugin (whaaat are you nuts? Your site just got hacked!) at the very least install “Limit Login Attempts” plugin and set to 3 attempts

  15. install “WordPress Security Scan” plugin. Remove meta generator tag and rename DB prefix from wp_ to something else

  16. create a new administrator user. Hint: don’t call it Admin, Sys, System, Administrator, Operator, WordPress or anything like that

  17. delete the old administrator users making sure the posts/pages are inherited by the new administrator user created in the previous step

  18. now you have a working and secured core WP installation

  19. reinstall all the plugins from the Admin Dashboard and reactivate them if WP has already had them deactivated. The settings should be already stored in the DB

  20. upload / ftp your theme to the live server and reactivate the theme. Theme settings should be picked up from the DB but I’ve had instances where you have to set up menus again – bad theme!

  21. last to upload / ftp is your wp-content/uploads (and any other non-WP folders in there after checking they are OK and contain only the correct media)

Note: this is a favoutire place for hackers to store their .php or .cgi scripts sometimes named “cache”

  22. I recommend using xcloner as a backup tool and setting up a cPanel crontab job to perform your backups. Either ftp them to another site or purchase an Amazon S3 storage bin – it’s ultra cheap

Depending on how familiar you are with WordPress and hosting control panels and how many plugins and uploads a site has, this process is very time consuming.  Restoration time depends on how many files make up your website as they all need to get checked.

9 Free Business Productivity Tools or Apps For Startups

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Starting a business can be a daunting endeavor, especially if all you have is a cool product and not enough capital. In the tech world, or in any other niche for that matter, most startuppers fail not because they have bad products but because they are unable to generate enough consumer interest in their products.

Considering overheads and other back-office expenses, this scenario doesn’t come as a surprise. So if you’re still starting out and find yourself strapped for much needed funding to keep your startup afloat, the following free business productivity tools are worth checking out.

shutterstock 92365489

If you need a collaboration tool your staff are most likely to adopt with relative ease and minimum training, take the social intranet route.

# 1. Bitrix24.com

Bitrix24.com is the fastest growing social intranet that’s free for businesses with 12 employees or less. The application comes as a combination of several different work tools like CRM, project management, real-time streaming, activity planner, file sharing, to name just a few. As it is cloud-based, access can be anywhere, whether using your computer or smartphone. An upgrade to unlimited users starts at $99 per month.

# 2. GotFreeFax.com

In this era of e-mail and instant messaging, you’d think fax machines are no longer relevant. But if a LinkedIn survey as reported by Mashable is to be believed, fax machines are still in until 2017 steps in.

As you might have already guessed from the site’s name, GotFreeFax.com is an online service that allows you to send up to three pages of fax for free (maximum of two faxes per day) to any number in the United States or Canada. The site also offers premium pay-per-fax service should you need to send more.

# 3. RememberTheMilk.com

RememberTheMilk.com is an online productivity tool that assists in task and time management. Remember The Milk essentially functions as your all-in-one task manager, electronic calendar and to-do list. Aside from allowing you to share and split tasks with other people, the application can be integrated with GMail, too.

The pro account is priced at $25 for one year and comes with exclusive mobile app features and Microsoft Outlook integration.

# 4. Kolab.org

Kolab.org is an open-source group collaboration server that allows for sharing of notes, e-mail access, calendar organization, task management, address book maintenance, news aggregation, phone sync and journal integration. Kolab is secure, scalable, reliable, mobile and professional, ensuring productivity every step of the way. As a whole, the application requires some getting used to. But once you get the hang of it, the hassle can be all worth it.

# 5. WaveApps.com

Formerly WaveAccounting.com, WaveApps.com is an accounting software that’s fast, simple and easy to use, offering unlimited invoicing and expense tracking. 100% free for small businesses with nine employees or less, it’s accountant-approved and specifically designed for non-accountants. You can also securely connect your bank and PayPal accounts or other sources of data, and your transactions are automatically imported into the accounting software.

# 6. PRLog.org

To make your business presence known, one surefire route to take is through the distribution of press releases. PRLog.org is a site where you can dispense press releases for free. And if you feel you don’t have the necessary expertise to create a killer press release, the site provides instructions on how to write one, even how to embed videos where necessary.

# 7. Weebly.com

One cardinal business rule is that businesses should have their own websites to boost their market presence online. Weebly.com is a free website creator that doesn’t require website creation expertise. Until you’re ready to go for more complex and/or self-hosted sites that would require monthly or yearly payments, Weebly.com is a good alternative.

# 8. Join.me

For those meetings or web conferences on the fly, Join.me is a simple-to-use teleconferencing application that allows you to review documents and designs, train staff, do product demonstrations – basically to get everyone apprised of company updates. You can do transatlantic web conferences and presentations, too.

# 9. IFTTT.com

IFTTT.com, which is short for “if this, then that,” functions like a computer program repeatedly uttering if/then logic all day long. With IFTTT, you set up “recipes” to assist you with task automation. For a recipe to work, you have to have a channel, a trigger and an action. Examples of channels are Facebook, e-mail, Evernote, LinkedIn, just to mention a few.

Performance artist wants the 'evil and rich' to give her 50 gold Apple Watches

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

AppleWatchEdition

A San Francisco-based performance artist is seeking 50 high-end Apple Watches for her next project as a part of a statement on society’s obsession with massive commercialism and new technology.

Qinmin Liu, who moved to the United States from China in 2009, posted a Google Doc form online encouraging — or rather, guilt tripping — those who want to buy Apple Watch Edition models (which start at $10,000) to purchase one instead for her project.

So far, she has received pledges to contribute from people all over the world: 16 from the U.S., 8 from China, 1 from South Korea, 1 from North Korea and 1 from India.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that these donors will actually purchase one for Liu when they go on sale starting April 24 (preorders begin April 10).

“I couldn’t care less about the technology and price,” Liu said in a statement. “I care more about individual’s behaviors, and want to explore the relationship between desire and action. In 2012, a Chinese teen [sold a] kidney to buy an iPhone and iPad. […] Questions and concerns led me to spark a dialogue [about] Apple Watch.”

Lui said the project isn’t necessarily about protesting technology but rather a statement on how it impacts modern society. In the Google Doc, she calls those thinking about purchasing the high-end Apple Watch “evil and rich.”

“I think Apple is a phenomenon, and everyone is influenced by it. When I see people lined up and waiting for 8 hours to get a newest Apple product, I consider it is a performance from my artistic perspective. I don’t really care about Apple’s product, but I do care the motivations and desires and curiosity that influence human being’s actions.”

Lui said she hopes Bill Gates will donate, too: “He probably hates the Apple Watch more than anyone… but he is very supportive to art.”

The window to donate is open until June 1.

Instagram's Layout app makes photo collages easy

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Instagram Layout App1

Collage lovers on Instagram, it might be your lucky day. Instagram is rolling out Layout, a free, standalone app that merges multiple images into one. It’s available on iOS now (on the App Store), and an Android version is expected in the next few months.

Users pick up to nine photos from their phone’s Camera Roll — whether they were snapped via Instagram doesn’t matter. The app organizes them in three sections: recent photos snapped, photos with people’s faces in them, and an area with all your shots. There’s also a “Photo Booth” feature, which employs the smartphone’s front-facing camera to snap four shots in quick succession.

Layout suggests up to 10 collage templates to choose from, depending on the number of selected photos, and lets folks tweak their work any number of ways, like dragging and dropping photos in the collage, pinch-to-zoom, and a sci-fi-like “mirror” effect that duplicates part of a shot. Afterwards, they can share their creations from inside the app to platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Flipboard, Slack and others. (Twitter integration is noticeably absent.)

UI Faces Tab1

Users can pick up to nine images to make into a collage. Layout recommends up to 10 collage styles depending on the number of selected images.

Why collages? Look at the numbers. According to Instagram, one in five active users — at least 60 million people — already use third-party mobile apps like Diptic, Moldiv and Stitch to make collages. Simply put, a standalone collage app keeps users engaged with Instagram features and services for longer periods of time. It also lowers the odds of Instagram users checking out photo apps from competitors.

Layout is the second companion app from Instagram. Last fall, the company rolled out an app called Hyperlapse that lets users create image-stabilized, time lapse videos.

“We really wanted to keep the main Instagram flow simple, and adding a bunch of these features would probably make it more complicated,” Joshua Dickens, an Instagram product designer, told Mashable.

That’s likely true, but with its newest app, Instagram also takes a lesson from Facebook. Over the last two years, the social network has employed a portfolio approach with mobile. Instead of baking all of its new features into the main mobile app, Facebook has introduced several standalone apps to mixed results, most notably its separate Messenger app. Others have included Mentions, aimed at celebrity Facebook users; an Instagram-like photo-sharing app called Camera; and Poke, a Snapchat competitor. (Facebook eventually pulled Camera and Poke from the App Store.)

In Hyperlapse’s case, the app debuted strongly but now ranks #1,355 for daily U.S. downloads, according to mobile tracking firm App Annie. That’s much lower than Instagram and Facebook, which still hover in the top 10.

But whether Layout succeeds with users in the long run or quickly fizzles, expect more collages in your Instagram feed in the coming weeks.

This site transforms Earth into a 'Tron' map of the world

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

pris9807

Have you ever wondered if our world was one big computer simulation? Well, if it is, we’ll probably never know, but now you can imagine what the big reveal might look like thanks to a beautiful new project that turns any real world location into a Tron style animated map.

Vector Map requires a WebGL-enabled browser to see its magic, but if your current browser isn’t up to the task, trust us, this is worth the update effort.

The map, created using Mapzen’s Tangram mapping software and data from 3D map database OpenStreetMap, plunges you into a neon-esque, animated map version of any area on the planet, as long as you have the right coordinates.

Discovered by Maps Mania, Vector Map doesn’t appear to have an easy search function just yet, but you can go here to gather your preferred coordinate information and then add each coordinate (separated by a forward slash) to the end of this URL (replacing the existing coordinates).

Exploring the Tron-ified world takes a little doing, but once you get a look at sights like the Eiffel Tower in Paris (above) transformed into a pulsing video game image, you’ll soon forget the small hurdles required to traverse this sci-fi version of our planet.

Astronauts May Be Able to Enjoy a Cocktail Like The Rest of Us Very Soon

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Astronauts hoping to sip drinks in style may soon have an open-top cocktail glass to look forward to.

Called the Zero Gravity Cocktail Project, the idea is to create an open-top cocktail glass that can be used in space. The glass would use an innovative “groove system” that would keep fluids under control, and only release them when someone takes a drink.

The creators of the glass design, called the Cosmic Lifestyle Corp., are currently seeking funding for the project on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter.com. However, as of this posting, the company has yet to raise $2,000 of the desired $30,000 before the April 2 deadline.

With current space-based beverage technology, astronauts wishing to quench their thirst must drink from a closed container, using a straw (with the exception of astronaut Don Pettit’s zero-gravity coffee “cup”). With the Zero Gravity Cocktail glass, astronauts would be able to drink from something that’s more like the drinking glasses used on Earth.

“We are creating an open-air drinking container that allows you to enjoy the aroma of the drink, yet keep the fluids under control. Your mouth completes the connection like a straw and you can suck the drink into your mouth,” the Kickstarter page said.

“We are also hoping to inspire the idea of a future when space hotels are in orbit and settlements are on other planets [where] people can relax and enjoy the experience of a quality drink, no matter what the gravity! Design aesthetics is just as important as the technical capabilities, and what is more stylish than a cocktail glass?”

According to the Kickstarter page, some of the requested funding would be used to make several 3D-printed prototypes of the glass, in order to revise and perfect the design. The printing needs to be done on mid- to high-level printers; basic, hobby-grade 3D printers don’t work because they can’t properly support the structure of the glass, the company said.

The money would also be used to test the glass on parabolic flights (flights where an airplane dips and climbs to simulate gravity changes) and also to find a third-party service that could reduce the costs of printing the glasses in the long term.

The company’s long-term goal is to 3D print a glass on the International Space Station using a Made In Space printer, but the company did not disclose on Kickstarter when it hopes this will happen.

The concept has received support from the Space Frontier Foundation and the Space Tourism Society, the Kickstarter page said. Advisors to the project include private space traveler Richard Garriott and Jonathan Knowles, a senior advisor at the 3D design firm Autodesk.

You Cannot Afford to Miss These Apps: LinkedIn Job Search, Launcher, Mr. Jump and more

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

app roundup 3191

With Meerkat still taking Twitter by storm (despite Twitter’s efforts to limit the app’s reach) and news of Facebook’s big plans for its upcoming F8 Developer Conference heating up, you may have missed some of this week’s best new apps.Luckily, each weekend, we round up our favorite new and updated apps, so you won’t miss out.

This week’s list includes LInkedIn’s job-finding app making its way to Android, a new image-editing app, Atari’s new fitness-themed offering that incorporates classic games and an iOS app-launcher that tuns your notifications menu into one-touch app shortcuts.

Check out the gallery, below, to see all the apps that made our list of top picks. And if you’re looking for more, take a look at our last roundup of can’t-miss apps.

Atari Fit

Leave it to the folks at Atari to make a fitness app that uses Pong, Centipede and other retro classics to motivate users to lose weight. The app offers a variety of workout plans based around your fitness goals. Logging exercise earns you coins, which you can use to play Pong, Centipede and Super Breakout.

Keep an eye on: The app’s social features, which allow you to join tams with friends and compete for positions on the leaderboards for the in-app games.

Pro-tip: Connect Apple’s Health app and Atari Fit will pull in stats from your wearables and other fitness-tracking apps like RunKeeper.

Free, iOS and Android

Enlight

The latest image-editing app from the same team behind Facetune, Enlight is, in many ways, an iPhone-photograher’s dream app. The app manages to strike the right balance between traditional Photoshop-like controls and artistic filters and effects. Users can choose from a wide range of preset filters or manually adjust individual elements of their photos, including a sophisticated curves control.

Keep an eye on: The app’s more artistic effects — like the artistic menu, which allow you to make your photos look like pop art — and the text menu allows you to add text, stickers and other additions to your images to instantly turn them into customized means.

Pro-tip: Swiping across your image adjusts the intensity of the filter and other effects. Use the masking feature to apply effects to specific portions of photos.

$3.99, iOS

Launcher

While iOS doesn’t allow users to customize their home screens the way their Android counterparts can with launcher apps, Launcher comes about as close as any iOS app we’ve seen. The app takes advantage of iOS 8’s notification center widgets, to allow users to place a wide variety of app shortcuts directly in their today menu.

Keep an eye on: Customizable widgets. You can add a Twitter shortcut that opens the app on the “compose new tweet” screen to save time, for example. Upgrading to the $3.99 Pro version makes widgets even more customizable.

Pro-tip: Use the Google Maps shortcut to automatically fill in your home or work address to automatically launch the app and get directions from your current location.

Free, iOS

LinkedIn Job Seacrh

LinkedIn finally brought its job-finding app to Google Play this week. The app allows users to search through the network’s many job listings and apply for positions from within the app. When you find a position you’re interested in, you can easily view which of your connections also work at the company.

Keep an eye on: Notification settings — the app will alert you when a new position opens up in a field or company that interests you and will also let you know when a post is about to expire.

Pro-tip: The app’s recommendations improve over time as you search for more positions and view more open listings. It also take into account the experience and skills in your profile so make sure each section of your profile is up to date.

Mr. Jump

Timing is everything in this surprisingly challenging game. The premise is simple: guide the box-headed Mr. Jump through each level without killing him on a spike or drowning him in the water. But the game is more difficult than it looks and timings is everything as more jumps doesn’t guarantee you a better result.

Keep an eye on:: The stats at the end of each round show you info like how far you made it through the level and hp many attempts you’ve made so far.

Pro-tip: Stuck on a level (and, believe us, you will be): you can skip current level and unlock a new one with an in-app purchase. And turn up your volume for the whimsical soundtrack, which may keep your rage in check.

Find Out The Secret, Why Apple Keeps Changing The MacBook Charger

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Got the new MacBook charger? No, the new new MacBook charger.

That will be the inevitable conversation in Starbucks stores across the country when Apple debuts the new MacBook in April. The laptop will ditch the company’s patented MagSafe charger in favor of a USB-C port, which also doubles as the connector for devices and monitors.

There’s just a teeny, tiny chance the change may lead to some frustration among those who like the convenience of sharing charging cables, and it reminds us that this is far from the first time Apple has taken similar steps. When it redesigned the MacBook and MacBook Air computers a few years ago, MagSafe got a generational refresh — which, of course, rendered the new laptops’ chargers incompatible with the old ones.

Why on Earth does Apple do this? The gang at College Humor has a profanity-laden theory, which will ring pretty true to anyone who survived the iPhone’s jump from 30-pin connector to Lightning port — instantly rendering all previous cables and accessories obsolete. (Watch above.)

Not that the rapid iteration will get you to stop buying Apple products or anything. Bring on the Apple Watch!

Easily Make Your Gmail Address Public Without Going Nuts

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

email screen

At a time when we’re all socially connected, making your email address publicly available is often the friendly and approachable thing to do. It can be scary, though — you’re opening up your inbox to potential spam and abuse.

But we have a solution. If you’re a Gmail user, there’s a simple hack that allows you to make your email address public, without the stress that comes with inbox overload. Read on for our easy-to-follow instructions.

By simply adding an extra period to your Gmail handle, you can change how your inbox treats mail sent specifically to that email address.

For example, if your Gmail address is bobroberts@gmail.com, your public email address would become bob.roberts@gmail.com.

gm1

Look to the left-hand side of your Gmail inbox and click “More labels.” Scroll down and select the option to “Create new label.” Now, create a new label for your future public email, such as “Public email.”

gm2

Now you’re going to create a filter so that every email sent to your address with the extra dot gets siphoned off into the label you just created.

Go to your settings menu by clicking the cog icon at the top-right of your screen, and select “Settings”. Click the “Filters” tab at the top of the screen, and then select “Create a new filter.”

In the “To” field, enter your email address with the dot in it, and then click “Create filter with this search” at the bottom-right. On the next screen, be sure to check the option to “Skip the Inbox (Archive it).”

Next, check the “Apply the label” box and use the drop-down menu to select your “Public email” label. Click “Create filter” and you’re finished.

gm3

To see the mail that has been sent to your “Public mail” folder, click the option to see “More labels” (you can have this folder always appear in the label list by clicking the drop-down arrow next to the label and choosing “Show” below “In label list”).

If you want to move an email you’ve received via your public Gmail address to your inbox, just right click on it and select that option, or check off the message, click the “Move to” folder icon at the top of the page and choose “Inbox.”

Live TV is finally Wscaping Cable's Clutches, This is Why...

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

16850598585 2f04b84f81 o

For years, analysts and prognosticators have been predicting that the world of TV was going to shift from “over-the-air” (OTA) to “over-the-top” (OTT). That is, people will go from primarily consuming their television through a cable box to consuming it through Internet streaming services — which may or may not be connected to an actual TV.

And although there is no doubt that viewers are increasingly consuming more and more content online, the big question has been, “Will the content creators actually make the jump to OTT services?”

We’re just a quarter of a way into 2015 and we’re already seeing signs that content providers are finally, finally willing to offer their services in real-time (as opposed to on demand, which has been around in various forms for a while) to users without the need for a separate cable TV subscription. The first indicator was Sling TV, Dish’s new $20 a month bundle of OTT channels. This week, we saw the early launch of PlayStation Vue and new rumors of Apple’s much-anticipated Internet TV service. And on April 12, HBO will officially launch HBO Now, it’s $15-a-month subscription offering that will bring the network’s programming to those who want to forego a traditional cable subscription.

HBO might be the biggest and most notable content company moving to the direct-to-consumer play, but they aren’t alone. Last year, CBS launched its CBS Now digital subscription service. NBC is also working on an OTT comedy channel.

So what’s happened? Why, after years of trying to avoid the conversation, have content companies started to come around to offering their content directly to consumers, either as a standalone service or in a broader OTT bundle?

Call it a mixture of the right timing, shifting consumer movements and perhaps, just perhaps, recognition from content creators that the tides away from cable TV are real.

The first reason content companies are finally starting to embrace OTT is because cord-cutting is really happening. It’s not just that more and more consumers are opting out of a monthly cable package — the amount of traditional TV viewers are watching is dropping, too.

A recent Nielsen report indicated traditional TV usage dropped 10.6% between September and January amongst 18- to 34-year-olds. That’s compared with a 4% average decline that’s been occurring since 2012. Nielsen’s figures show that primetime TV has 20% fewer young-adult viewers than it did just four years ago.

Instead, viewers — particularly millenials — are moving to subscription streaming video services in droves. A ComScore report in October 2014 showed that 24% of adults 18-24 don’t pay for traditional TV service. Those are figures that should scare anyone in the content business.

And although some in the cable TV industry may still argue that cord-cutting isn’t killing its business, the fact is that more users are ditching cable and fewer younger users are even bothering to sign up in the first place. The amount of “cord-nevers” — that is, viewers who have never subscribed to cable TV as an adult — is on the rise.

This is only going to increase over time. As analyst Horace Dediu notes, we’ve seen this before.

The same phenomenon occurred with mobile vs. fixed telephony. For several years it seemed that mobile was sustaining to fixed or that fixed was immune due to lock-ins. The fixed telephone incumbents insisted that the data was inconclusive. Then the trickle of abandonment turned into a deluge.

Dediu continues, writing, “the point when we will look back and say that cable was finished will probably come by the end of this decade.”

If content companies can admit that cord-cutting is a real thing (and it is), the silver lining is that viewers are still watching subscription content. In a decade, the next wave of adult TV viewers might be more comfortable consuming content from YouTube or Twitch, but for now, online TV viewing and streaming video services are on the rise.

According to NBC Universal’s Alan Wurtzel, subscription video viewing was up 22% year over year in 2014.

Nielsen’s latest total audience report shows 40% of U.S. households subscribe to at least one video streaming service as of November 2014.

And although price sensitivity is one reason users are cutting the cord (after all, cable TV costs have continued to increase), it’s not the only reason. Users also cut the cord and shift to online streaming services because the primary place of consumption is moving away from a shared TV set in a living room and to a laptop, tablet and smartphone.

Even for me, I pay an absurd amount of money each month for cable TV (I also pay for Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and Netflix) and I increasingly watch as much — if not more — content on my iPad as I do on my TV. And my TV has a Roku 3, Apple TV and Fire TV connected to it in addition to its cable box.

Nielsen’s latest Total Audience Report shows that 75% of U.S. households now have broadband at home. There are similar penetration levels for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

Moreover, now that the Aereo Supreme Court case has been decided, it’s easier for networks to start looking at ways to offer their own solutions. Aereo may have lost in court, but it did change the game and the conversation.

But timing is right in another way, too: cable providers are finally starting to see that they can still make plenty of money by letting up on content providers’ abilities to sign content deals elsewhere.

That’s partially because no matter how these OTT bundles and services are sold, the services will still require broadband to deliver content. And who controls the broadband pipe? The cable companies.

But it’s more than just that. The Internet providers have finally realized they can also get a cut of the subscription offering profits if they offer to bundle those services in with Internet subscriptions.

I predicted this move more than two years ago and its finally starting to happen. Verizon started offering Netflix with its service last year in some test markets. And Cablevision will be offering HBO Now to its broadband providers, no TV service needed.

The biggest challenge some content companies faced when considering creating or making OTT deals was incurring the wrath of the cable companies. But if Comcast and others can find a way to be part of the conversation — and profit from that conversation — maybe consumers can actually get something out of it, too.

In his analysis of the cable industry Thursday, Horace Dediu discussed some of the reasons the cable industry has avoided significant disruption (until now), 20 years after it reached saturation point.

As he points out, however, the rationale for those reasons are slowly disappearing. This is fueled by the reality of cord-cutting and the timing for content creators to actually make a move.

But the bigger, unspoken reason is simple: Content companies know they have to evolve or die.

This is a lesson mass media has had to learn time and time again. The music and newspaper industries both largely failed to evolve and adopt to digital models before they were disrupted in ways that changed the underlying business structures irreparably.

Television can’t afford to do that. Already the plethora of content opportunities means that it’s harder than ever for content creators to amass huge viewing audiences (outside of major sporting events such as the Super Bowl and World Cup). The number of people tuning into live primetime TV for a hit show is far lower than the numbers from even a decade ago, and that’s only going to continue.

The reality is, if content creators don’t skate to where the puck is going to be, they’ll be disrupted by a new generation of content creators and options.

The current players might as well disrupt itself, lest they risk being out of the game entirely in the future.

Twitter celebrates 9th Birthday with Video of Kids, Who Tells How to Party

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

The microblogging service known as Twitter, which grew from Internet curiosity into essential media tool and social media channel, just turned 9 years old.

To celebrate its milestone, the company, which launched in 2006, created a charming video that features 9-year-old children describing what that age means to them.

Companies turning one year older aren’t usually noteworthy until you start talking decades, but in this case, the video’s cuteness factor makes it hard to resist.

Twitter turns 9 years old today. 9 years! Birthdays are always a good time to express some gratitude.

Learn How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Companies have worked on building their brand for as long as companies have been in existence. We recognize brands just from their logo or colors. We visit their websites and social media networks. We even share their content with our own networks.

personal branding

Building a brand isn’t just for business. In fact, we all have a personal brand. Just like any brand, building a personal brand is something that will happen online with or without our input. But you can take control of your personal brand and turn it into what you want it to be. How? Using the same tools and techniques that businesses use to build their brands.

Materials used for brand-building have included brochures, business cards, Facebook and Twitter accounts, LinkedIn, and of course websites. Building a personal brand is just as important as building a company brand. This is true even if you build your company’s brand apart from your own. What do I mean by this?

Let’s say you’re a writer that writes tutorials about WordPress. You have a website that focuses on WordPress tutorials and the site is known by its tutorial branded name and not by your name. If you guest post on another site, the post will be more important and valuable to readers of the site if they are familiar with you and your work. Not just “a gal that writes on that site,” but you… they know you by your name. You have your own platform; your own brand.

You can use your WordPress website as your hub to the world. Visitors might connect with you on one site or network, find your website, and then connect with you on other networks. And using WordPress is a great way to build your personal brand. This article will look at how to do this with the purpose of promoting your work and services. However, aside from a portfolio and services, these ideas work just as well even if you don’t provide services. Let’s take a look at what’s involved in building your personal brand, and then we’ll take a look at how to build your brand using WordPress.

Elements of a Personal Brand

When you think about your brand, think about how your potential clients will interact with it. Think about how they will recognize your brand and share your information. Here are some of the ways they can learn about you and your brand:

  • Your name and URL

  • Your services

  • Your connections

  • Your portfolio

  • Your social network

  • Your contact information

  • Your website

  • Your “About Me” page

  • Your email URL

  • Your bio

Google Yourself

Use Google and other search engines to audit your online presence. Knowing your current status (or the current status of others with the same name as you) will give you a starting point in building your brand. Keep a check on what others are saying. Use alerts so you know when others mention you. If you do come across a situation that needs to be addressed, respond and resolve issues as quickly and professionally as you can.

Your Personally Branded WordPress Website and Email

Building your personal brand is about promoting yourself. Your URL should be your name, or at least a variation on your name that is available. Try to get a .com. This is important even if you use a different website to work from. Why? Because you can use it as your email address–even if you just use the URL as a redirect to your primary site. If I got an email from an address like hotlips962@aol.com telling me they could improve my SEO I’d delete it straight away. Your email address should look professional and send your clients to the website you want them to go to.

Your Website’s Design

Use a theme that looks and works well. You want to look professional. Use colors and fonts that match your brand. Use images and categories that portray the kind of work you do. Elegant Themes’ portfolio themes do this nicely.

Logo

A logo is one of the most identifiable branding elements. Clients will recognize it instantly. WordPress lets you take advantage of your logo by letting you place it front and center on your website.

Develop a sharp logo that stands out and is easily identifiable. Think about Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Did their logos come to mind? You can picture them in your mind and you recognize them immediately. They’re simple, yet identifiable. They’re distinguishable. They look great on mobile devices.

Your logo should tell your story without much effort. If possible, hire a designer to create your logo for you. Hire a designer that gets the foundational message of your mission (you don’t have to pay that much). If you have to create your own, draw pictures that relates to your mission and will connect you with your readers.

Colors

Just like your logo, the colors you use say a lot about your brand. You want to use colors that your clients can associate with your brand. For example, when you think about Barbie, you think about a specific shade of pink (Barbie Pink – for real). You can do the same thing with your WordPress site. Use your color-pickers and specify color combinations to represent your brand. When readers see those colors they will think about you.

Produce Relevant Content

When you own a blog you have the ability to produce any kind of content you want. Resist. Resist the urge to publish anything and everything that crosses your mind. Resist the urge to rant about the cab-driver that took you the wrong way, or that guy that pulled into your lane without looking.

Produce content on your specific topic that others will want to read. Produce content that others will want to share. Give readers a reason to come back to your website. Create in-depth articles and reviews that your readers will find helpful.

The same goes for sharing content. Share content that will add value to your followers. Associate yourself with strong brands in your topic. Give good and proper links to other quality sites and articles. Don’t plagiarize. Cite your work and give proper references.

Your Portfolio – Samples of Your Work

The work you do tells your readers a lot about you. Even if you’re not trying to sell through your site, your WordPress site could include samples of your work. This can be a page that includes a gallery, a list of samples with links, and an image in a widget in your sidebar. You can feature a sample on your home page using your featured slider. You can do this with a portfolio theme, or you can use a plugin that adds some nifty features.

Divi

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress portfolio divi

Divi includes a portfolio module that’s super easy to use. Just create a page using the page-builder and add the module. Then select which categories to use in your portfolio and then show them as either a carousel or a grid. You can make as many portfolios as you want. You can also build a filterable portfolio.

Divi is part of the $69 per year Personal plan that includes access to all themes, perpetual updates, and premium support.

Portfolio

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress portfolio

This free plugin lets you add images (which can be screenshots of your samples), and then place links on each one. You can determine the thumbnail and image sizes and choose how many images to show. You can sort them by date, titles, random, etc. It will show text that includes information about the project, a link, and more. It adds a portfolio tab to your dashboard. You create the portfolio details just like you would create a post. You then create a page and select the portfolio template in the page attributes. It’s simple to use and looks great.

Services You Provide

Along with your portfolio will be a page that tells the types of services you provide. You can so this by writing your services on a page, creating graphics, using a theme with this built in, or using a plugin.

Divi

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress Services you Provide divi

ET’s theme Divi has modules that let you create pages to show off your services in a neat table complete with pricing and features. You create a layout using a module called Pricing Table. You then fill in the details. You can even add images, links, HTML, and more. You can make the table featured if you want. And you can have as many pricing tables as you want.

Our Services Showcase

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress Our Services Showcase

This free plugin lets you create services in the same way that you create a post. It provides icons that change size as you mouse over them. You can choose from two different templates and customize the font sizes and colors. You choose how many services to display and the text for the link. You can have as many services as you want. You can place the list of services on any page or post with a simple shortcode. The result is clean and elegant and it’s responsive.

Your Social Network

One of the most important tools you have at your disposal is your social network. Make your social network activities visible so other can follow and connect with you.

Monarch

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress Monarch

Monarch is ET’s social media plugin that was designed to get you more followers and shares. You can place it in five different locations on your site, on images and video, and have it to automatically pop up or fly in based on three different triggers. It has several different icon styles and you can customize your own colors. It includes counts of shares. It even has a dashboard where you can adjust your settings and see your stats. You can import and export your data.

Monarch is part of the $89 per year Developer plan that includes access to all themes, plugins, layered PSD files, perpetual updates, and premium support.

Your Bio

You should place your bio at the end of any content you write. Spend some time and write a great bio that rocks. It should establish who you are, what you do, and tell if you are available for hire. It will let you hype and sell yourself as a professional in your field.

Notice that my bio appears at the bottom of this article. It shows my picture set apart from the rest of the content, then my name as a large title. Then there are two sentences about me. The first tells what I do and where I am from. This establishes my credibility as a professional. The next sentence is a little about my lifestyle and hobbies. It shows that I am a real person that you can relate to, making me personal. You know from this that I like coffee and sci-fi. It’s more interesting and even has some humor, giving potential clients and followers a better idea of what to expect if they reached out to me.

I have a real personality and this personality will show through in my writing. Sonic screwdriver. (I just proved my point, in case you were wondering what I just did there). I’ve always wondered what would happen if a DeLorean drove into a Police box doing 88 MPH. Talk about not needing roads…

You can use the little bio section in your WordPress profile, but a by far better choice is using a plugin to create a fancy bio.

Starbox – the Author Box for Humans

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress Starbox the Author Box for Humans

This free plugin will show your photo, your name, your bio info, provide social media links so your fans can follow you, and has a tab with your latest posts. It was designed to be pretty and capture the attention of your readers. It will use the bio info that you’ve placed in your WordPress user bio. You can place the bio in your posts and as a shortcode in widgets. You can choose its size, position, and one of six themes. Plus, it’s very easy to set up and use.

ET Shortcodes

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress ET Shortcodes

You can also place bio information in any post or page using ET’s shortcodes. It adds a button to your visual editor called Add Author Bio. You simply click the button, supply a URL for the image, choose whether or not to allow resizing, add your bio information, and click OK. It will add the bio after the post.

ET Shortcodes is part of the $89 per year Developer plan that includes access to all themes, plugins, layered PSD files, perpetual updates, and premium support.

About Me

You can easily create an About Me page that includes some good information about who you are and what you’re all about. You can take this a couple of steps further by including widget in your sidebar, such as those that come with many ET themes or an About.me widget.

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress ET About Me Widget

The ET About Me Widget lets you title the widget, place a link to the image you want to use, and write a short bio. It’s a quick and easy way to display your bio in your sidebar. You can even include HTML if you want.

About.me Widget

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress About.me Widget

One more thing to consider is integrating your About Me page from a social networking website called About.me. About.me is an interesting site for self-promotion that anyone can, and should, use to the greatest extent. Once you’ve set up your About.me account and filled in all of the information, you can integrate your page into a widget on your WordPress website.

This free plugin will include your photo, your text with URLs, and your social media links. You can customize how the information displays within the widget. You can choose between background photo, bio photo, or to not show a photo. You can choose how large your name displays, or to not display it. You can choose to whether or not to show your headline, bio, and apps. It is very simple and easy to use. Once you make changes at About.me, those changes are made on every site that you use this widget. This allows you to change information in one place and it is reflected everywhere you need it.

Contact Information

Rather than just a contact page (which you should have) you can also display your contact information on your site. You can easily do this by using text in a widget. Another way to do this is by placing it in the header with something like GC Message Bar or a theme that has this function built in like Divi.

Divi

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress Contact Information divi

Divi lets you place a bar in the header that keeps your phone number and email on the screen at all times. As visitors scroll down the page, the header will shrink slightly but remain on the page. This places your contact information within their line of sight and keeps it there without it being disruptive to your content. It also includes links to your social networks and RSS.

GC Message Bar

How to Build Your Personal Branding Using WordPress GC Message Bar

This free plugin lets you place a message bar at the top or bottom of our screen. You can customize the message any way you want, so you can use this to place your phone number and email address on your site. It has a button that can lead to any URL you want it to (such as your contact page). The bar remains in place as visitor’s scroll up or down, so your information is always available to them. It has many styles to choose from and you can customize it to match your site.

Wrapping Up

Whether you’re doing business or not, WordPress is an amazing tool for building your personal brand. With just a few tools and techniques your WordPress site can help you build a personal brand that is recognizable and one that others will share and follow.

You Will be Able to Request An Uber Ride Via Other Apps Very Soon

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Next time you request an Uber ride, you might not even have to use the Uber app. The controversial on-demand car service has introduced a feature that will allow developers to embed Uber within other apps. This means you could be reading a restaurant review in one app, and then request an Uber car to take you there — without ever leaving the original app.

Uber

Uber launched its API in August to open up the service to third-party developers, but the capabilities were limited then, only allowing developers to send address destinations to Uber or view ride histories. Now, the updated API includes a feature called “Request endpoint,” which incorporates the full Uber experience into existing apps. It also opens up more possibilities around how people can use Uber the future.

“Putting this power in the hands of developers has our imaginations running wild,” the company said in a blog post. “Should an Uber be waiting immediately after your last meeting of the day? Will someone create a way to request a car with just a simple SMS? We have no idea what you might build, but we cannot wait to find out.”

While Uber is already working with companies such as Starbucks, United, OpenTable, TimeOut and TripAdvisor as a part of an affiliate program, the latest news opens up the service to all brands and their apps.

You Can Now Stream Full Length Songs for Free From the Twitter App

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Twitter and Rhapsody have teamed up on a new feature that allows the music service’s subscribers to share full-length tracks on Twitter that anyone can listen to, even if they don’t have a subscription themselves.

twitter music

Rhapsody announced the partnership Tuesday at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and the feature is already available to Twitter’s mobile users.

The feature uses Twitter’s audio cards, a tool first introduced last year that allows Twitter users to stream audio directly from tweets. But when it launched in October, the feature was limited to a set of early launch partners who were the only accounts that could share new audio cards.

With the new partnership, any of Rhapsody’s subscribers — the service says it has more than two million — can share any song from the site’s catalog to Twitter. The cards only work within the Twitter app though, so if you open the cards from the web you will be directed to Rhapsody’s website, where non-subscribers can only listen to a 10-second preview of the song.

The company is hoping the partnership will lure more subscribers to its service, which still has fewer paid users than Spotify. Each Twitter cars also has a “learn more about Rhapsody” option within each card, which directs users to Rhapsody’s site. The site is also tapping into its relationships with artists like Wiz Khalifa, Pearl Jam, Fifth Harmony, Flo Rida and Hunter Hayes who will al release tracks from their upcoming albums via the new feature.

The Smallest 3D Printed Drill in the World, Useless Though

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

A man has just created the world’s smallest 3D-printed working drill and it is perfect.Lance Abernethy is a maintenance engineer from New Zealand who has an obsession with small things. It was this obsession that led him to create the tiny tool, according to 3D Print.

The maker of small things drew up the plans off his regular-sized drill using CAD software OnShape before using his personal 3D printer, on a very slow speed, to create the miniature design — which measures 17mm tall, 7.5mm wide and 13mm long.

“I wanted to make it as small as possible so I cramped all my parts as tight as possible,” Abernethy told 3D Print. “It took me 3 hours to solder and try and squeeze [the parts] in … The wires kept breaking off when I was trying to connect them and it was a nightmare trying to hold them in place and try to not short the battery.”

The three-piece drill is made up of a hearing aid battery, a headphone cable, a 3D-printed chuck, a small button, a miniature motor and a 0.5mm drill piece. It is covered by two 3D-printed halves. Abernethy said the hardest part was not the printing, but the construction of the tiny delight.

Google Changes App Approval Process for Android Developers

Via:MyTutorialGuru.com

Google just made changes to its Play Store policies that will affect every Android developer.Android developers now have to wait for apps to be approved by Google after they submit them to the Play Store.

Nexus Phone Thumb 1 1

Previously, Google didn’t have an approval process for new apps and only reviewed apps if they were reported for violating its policies. The new measures have been in effect for several months, Google said, assuring developers it hasn’t slowed down the submission process.

“We value the rapid innovation and iteration that is unique to Google Play, and will continue to help developers get their products to market within a matter of hours after submission, rather than days or weeks,” Google’s product manager for Google Play, Eunice Kim, wrote in a blog post. “In fact, there has been no noticeable change for developers during the rollout.”

If that sounds like a not-so-subtle dig at Apple, that’s because it probably is. Google’s Cupertino-based rival is known for its often-lengthy app approval process.

Google is also rolling out a new age-based rating system for apps. Beginning in May, developers will be required to submit a questionnaire for all new and existing apps so that Google can designate each app with a relevant rating. The ratings will be based on standards set by international organizations like the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC). Countries that don’t have an official ratings organization will see generic ratings.

The questionnaires are available to developers now and Google says apps “may be blocked in certain territories or for specific users,” if developers don’t submit them by May. Users will begin to see ratings on Google Play apps “in the coming weeks.”
